In year 1938 six million listened radio performance of the War ot the Worlds by H. G. Wells. That was a parody in form of broadcast from scene.

Sixth part of all listeners believed it is happening in reality. People started to panic, ten thousand of them leaved their homes, and all roads were full of refugees. Telephone communications were paralyzed, because thousands of people called and reported as if they had seen marsian space ships.

Authorities tried to calm down the inhabitants six weeks. Such is the power of printed word.

Harry Potter (J. K. Rowling)

Popular fantasy gook series about young boy with lightning-like mark on his forehead was published first time in 1995, although it was written in 1992. Why? Because printing house did not accept first book for long time — they did not see how it can be popular.

That is why they did not promote this book. They did not put money in it, and Rowling did not have money for advertising. One day the story about Harry Potter became bestseller, and it was unexpected for both the author and printing house.

The Three Musketeers (Alexander Dumas)

D’Artanyan was called Nathaniel in the manuscript, but publishers did not like it and they crossed it out. Do you like ir?

Alexandre Dumas did write this book as a serial for a newspaper. He was paid for lines. Because everyone wants to eat, and not only bananas, Dumas invented servant of Atos called Grimo to make his fee bigger. This Grimo answered to all questions with yes or no. The next book “After twelve years” was paid by word count, and Grimo started to talk more.
