More Detailed Information about B-Series Paper Size
The dimensions of the B series paper sizes are defined by the ISO 216 international paper size standard. It is not as popular as A (where A4 is very common) series but this paper dimension is usually used on stationery, cards and posters. B series was brought into being to provide a wider range of paper sizes
Each B series size is between an A series paper size. For example, B5 measures between A4 and A5.
The B series uses an aspect ratio of 1:√2. The standard lengths and widths of the B series are rounded to the nearest millimeter.
Complete information on ISO paper formats, including the A and C series, their origin, purpose, use and distribution can be found on Wikipedia or much more scientific Wikipedia article

And this is not all, there are even more B-class paper sheet dimensions!
Paper | Millimeters | Centimeters | Inches |
B11 | 22×31 | 2,2×3,1 | 0,9×1,2 |
B12 | 15×22 | 1,5×2,2 | 0,6×0,9 |
B13 | 11×15 | 1,1×1,5 | 0,4×0,6 |
B0+ | 1118×1580 | 111,8×158,0 | 44,0×62,2 |
B1+ (B1XL) | 720×1020 | 72,0×102,0 | 28,3×40,2 |
B2+ | 520×720 | 52,0×72,0 | 20,5×28,3 |
The B1+ 1050 mm × 750 mm (41.3 in × 29.5 in) also named B1XL, and B2+ 750 mm × 530 mm (29.5 in × 20.9 in) are both uncut and oversize of B sizes. They are not defined by ISO216 standard, because they do not follow the √2:1 size ratio. This kind of size is used for special needs of the printing and related industries.
Math of paper dimensions
Format B is homothetic. Each paper size is a perfect half of the larger size. Folding a B0 size creates an B1 size, folding an B1 size creates an B2 size, and so on.
In other words, each size is based on the square root of two. This is why two pieces of paper with the same proportions can fit perfectly together when placed alongside one another.
The B paper sizes are a bit larger than their A series counterparts and are based on the geometric mean of two consecutive A series sheets. For example, B4 is between A3 and A4 in size, and B5 is between A4 and A5.
While the format A was created on the basis of a surface (A0 measures strictly 1 m²), format B was based on a measure of size: B0 width is 1 meter. Area of B0 is 1,414 Square meter.
As such, it is easy to know the width of all B formats dividing B0’s one. However, it is more complicated to calculate its weight, since the weight of the paper is most often expressed in g/m², in reference to A0.
Paper Size Comparison and Uses
B series is less common in office use; it is more regularly used in commercial printing to describe the width of a press where multiple pages are laid on one larger sheet:
- B3 paper is used to print two US letter or A4 pages side by side.
- Four pages would be printed on a B2 sheet.
- Eight pages would be printed on a B1 sheet.
The B-series is widely used in printing to accommodate for both paper size and printing press size. This format allows widening the margins to integrate a sheet from the A series and of the same number.
B sheets are often used to print two A sheets at once. For example, one B3 covers two A4 and one B2 has room for four A4.
B5, B6 are used for printing books. B4 is for newspapers, supported by most copying machines in addition to A4. Popular B8 use is playing cards.

RB & SRB Paper Sizes
In the early days, the sizes of B paper series encountered the same problem as the sizes of A paper series, that was, in industrial printing, the paper edge ink penetration might cause the problem of insufficient size after cutting. In this case, paper sizes such as RB (Raw Format B) and SRB (Supplementary Raw Format B) were also introduced. The aim was that after cutting out the ink stained paper edges, the remaining size is exactly the standard ISO216 sizes.
Theoretical sizes for RB (105% of the area of the corresponding B size) and SRB (115% of the area) sizes are given in the following tables.
Paper | Millimeters | Centimeters | Inches |
RB0 | 1025×1449 | 102,5×144,9 | 40,4×57,0 |
RB1 | 725×1025 | 72,5×102,5 | 28,5×40,4 |
RB2 | 513×725 | 51,3×72,5 | 20,2×28,5 |
RB3 | 363×513 | 36,3×51,3 | 14,3×20,2 |
RB4 | 257×363 | 25,7×36,3 | 10,1×14.3 |
